The Portrait of Ancient Ladoga


     The unique ensemble of the mediaeval city has being forming for centuries. The construction of the new buildings always took place within the territory developed in the XII-XIII centuries. About 160 architectural monuments like convents, churches, bell towers, houses, barns, ancient burial hills preserved in Old Ladoga. The monastery of St. Nicholas marks the southern boundary of the village as well as in the ancient times it spotted the border of the city; the church of the Assumption marks the northern boundary. There were five more churches between them in the heyday of Ladoga, the stone fortress still overlooks the city in the middle of the settlement on the cape at the influx of the Volhov into the small river Ladozhka.
