In commemoration of G. S. Lebedev
Famous Russian historian and archeologist G. Lebedev died. Gleb Sergeevich headed for several years the northwest archeological expedition of the Sate University of St. Petersburg in Leningrad region. The excavation materials allowed for the first time making a report of the ancient past of northwestern Russia based on archeological data. Lebedev contributed a lot to attract attention to Old Ladoga presenting the city as unique phenomena in the culture of Ancient Russia and in formation of Russian statehood. His students also dedicated their research works to this early mediaeval city, some of them remained in Old Ladoga to work in the conservation area. Gleb Sergeevich left in the memory as an outstanding scholar and an interesting person. His book “the archeological monuments of Leningrad region” (Leningrad, Lenizdat, 1977) illuminates this subject and is characterized by a wonderful narration interesting for both the specialists and the funs of ancient history and it’s mysteries.
